Casement Windows with Transoms in a Topsfield Home

A tall opening that reads as one window and is actually four, with the grid pattern carried through all of it. Done in December, in the snow.

Some openings are a window and some are a piece of the room. This one runs nearly floor to ceiling in a two storey wall, two casements below with two transoms above them, and the whole thing sits in a deep trimmed reveal that makes it the first thing you see walking in. There is no hiding a mistake in an opening like that.

The challenge

Four units that have to read as one

When a tall opening is made of separate units, every joint between them is visible from across the room, and the grid bars have to line up across all four or the eye catches it immediately. The spacing of the bars also has to carry through the transom even though the transom is a different height than the sash below, which means the grid is not simply copied, it is laid out. On top of that this was a December install, so each opening was out and closed the same hour rather than being left open while the next one was measured.

How Seaside solved it

Lay out the grid before anything is ordered

We set the grid layout for the whole opening first and ordered the four units to that layout, rather than ordering four standard windows and hoping the bars happened to meet. The casements open outward with a crank, which on an opening this tall is the only operating style that gives you real ventilation without a sash you need a ladder to reach.

The work

The result

It looks like it came with the house

Which is the only acceptable outcome on an opening this prominent.

The practical gain is ventilation. Casements seal by compression against the frame rather than sliding past it, so they close tighter than a double hung, and on a tall wall that faces weather that difference is something you feel in February rather than something you read on a label.
