A Three Panel Sliding Patio Door in Charlestown, MA

A wide opening onto a covered deck, with no room on either side for a door that swings. Three panels, one moving, and the deck stayed usable.

The back of this Charlestown house opens onto a covered deck that runs the width of the building. The old opening was wide, which sounds like an advantage until you try to put a door in it. Hinged doors need somewhere to go, and this deck did not have it.

The challenge

A wide opening with nowhere for a door to swing

A pair of French doors across an opening this size means two leaves sweeping thirty inches into either the deck or the room, and here both were spoken for: the deck holds a grill and a table, the inside runs straight into the kitchen. A standard two panel slider would have fit the width but given back a smaller clear opening than the wall deserved. The covered roof over the deck also meant working in a fixed headroom with no room to tip a large unit into place from outside.

How Seaside solved it

Three panels, one of them moving

We set a three panel Harvey slider with a fixed lite at each end and the operating panel in the middle, which uses the whole width of the opening for glass and takes exactly zero floor space to open. The screen runs on its own track so the door can stay open on a summer evening without the deck coming inside with it.

The result

The deck got bigger without anyone building anything

Nothing moved and the usable space went up, because the floor that a swinging door would have needed is now floor.

The second thing the owner noticed is light. Three panels of glass across a wall that previously held a door and a chunk of siding changes a back room more than any single window will.
